“Back from a weekend of training with Howard Popkin and Joe Brogna, the leaders of the Ginjukai school of Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu.
I think you would struggle to find a better seminar than those led by Howard and Joe. They both embody the qualities of excellent teachers – generous, warm, insightful; they really want you to absorb the information. Further, they are martial artists of sublime quality – world class, in fact. (Not to mention full of hilarious anecdotes.)
The system itself has similarities to its aikido offspring, but maintains some profound differences. It is more direct, subtle and compact. Footwork is almost nil, yet all the power you need is right there. Principles were examined and reinforced, and practicalities demonstrated to dynamic result.
The atmosphere was universally welcoming, and the attendees came from a variety of backgrounds – Jujutsu, karate, judo, hapkido etc and of course aikido, with everyone enjoying the diversity and all leaving with practical ideas/techniques/principles with which to enhance their own practice.
I couldn’t recommend this experience highly enough, whatever your system. I cannot believe I missed the first five…”
